Hello, I’m Dr Toni Surace. Founder and Owner of Smile N Co and Principal Dentist BDSC (Melb). I’ve had an extensive career in the field of dentistry spanning 30 years. Over the course of my career, I have owned and managed multiple dental practices, and I’ve trained many other dentists throughout this time.
I graduated from dental school full of energy, passion, and purpose. I couldn’t wait to help people live healthier, more confident lives. But just one year later, my body began to fail me.
It started quietly – stiffness in my joints, strange pains that wouldn’t go away, exhaustion that sleep couldn’t fix. Eventually, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, and later, sarcoidosis. Both are autoimmune diseases that cause your own body to attack itself.
At first, I fought it. I kept pushing through, working long hours, pretending I was fine, refusing to slow down. But there came a point when even walking became difficult. I had to face the truth: I couldn’t just push my way through this. I needed to listen to my body, my emotions, my life.
Every day since, I’ve had to take medication just to move, to work, to do the things I love. But those challenges changed me. They gave me a deeper understanding of what real health means. It’s not perfection. It’s not about never getting sick. It’s about learning to live well, even when life gives you something hard.
I began to see the connection between the mouth and the body more clearly than ever before, and how inflammation, infection, diet, hormones, and even stress are all intertwined. I realised that dentistry could be about so much more than fixing teeth. It could be a gateway to true wellness.

My journey with autoimmune disease will always be part of me, but it’s also my greatest teacher. It taught me compassion, resilience, and how powerful healing can be when you address the whole person.
Every patient who walks into our practice reminds me why I do this.
Because I know what it feels like to lose your health and how precious it is to get it back.
